Ava smiled wryly. From her vantage point high on the hill she watched the village burn. Bright ochre flames gave way to plumes of thick black smoke as the acrid stench filled her nostrils. The fire spread amidst a thundering growl yet the children's shrieks of terror pierced it's fury carrying deep into the night.

To this day I don't know why I did it. I suppose it seemed the appropriate response at the time. I'd never considered myself a violent man. Just barely a man perhaps.


 

I can still see her there crumpled on the ground in that cold dark alley her eyes staring back at me, her face contorted into a mask of fear and confusion.

There are certain rules that one must follow to survive a hangover. Hi my name is Matt “Graduating College Sucks” Lawson and I am the one person in America who did not like the 2009 film Hangover because I found that its idealized portrayal of a hangover as a cathartic and spiritual journey was the biggest load of crap ever since Juno convinced some 16 year old tramps in Gloucester that teen pregnancy is "in."  This year, more than any other year, juveniles and soon to be college dropouts are reaching for hangover glory, only to find themselves hugging the steps of an all night deli and using their vomit as a pillow.

Recent events in the Middle East reminded me of an observation made by Stanley J. Tambiah: "…the French Revolution had ushered in the crowd as an enduring political force...." In this he was echoing Gustav Le Bon's prediction: "While all our ancient beliefs are tottering and disappearing while the old pillars of society are giving way one by one, the power of the crowd is the only force that nothing menaces, and of which the prestige is continually on the increase. The age we are about to enter will in truth be the era of crowds."

                Each New Year begins in the grip of winter. The world is held hostage by the unforgiving cold the snow that blankets the ground and the gray skies that obscure the sun from view. With the holidays over but the winter weather remaining the months of January and February can seem to stretch on ahead of us forever.
