I used to have a good friend some time ago named Kevin and as is often the case with my friends we lost contact over the years. We worked for the same company as traveling insurance salesmen; he being the senior representative. I think I will always remember him for a bizarre story that he told me one day while I was driving us to a work function in Charleston.

“Hello Mr. Fulsom.  I’m pleased to make your acquaintance.  Where’s your significant other?”

“At home.  She wouldn’t come today.”

“I’m sorry but I only work with couples who need help in their relationships.”

“I understand, Dr. Jeffords, but if she won’t come than won’t you at least help me work through some of our issues.  Maybe I can relay some of the information back to her and she might eventually… I don’t know… come.”

This is a story about Aaron. Aaron was – and probably still is - perfectly brilliant. He's written a lot of books, is quoted widely and was, many years back, a finalist for a MacArthur Grant. Aaron also was - and probably still is - a perfect asshole. Brilliance and assholeness do seem apt bedfellows for a lot of people. None hold a candle to Aaron's particularly inspired synthesis of the two traits.

He awoke with his eyes part of the auburn painting in this his last morning sunrise. His life meaningless without a single success, he was stranded in time between fame and blame but not for lack of hard work.  Before going to sleep tonight he spent his entire life savings on this one last stab at success but this time with nothing left in life to lose but this day he swore this time this once it would not fade away.
