  Gaze deep into my eyes and you will see
Stare into my soul and you will know
You will know the hell I have endured
You will know the heartache I carry
You will know burden of forced charm
These eyes have seen atrocities committed
by seemingly mild-mannered family men
Car accidents, muggings, homicides
and other dangers of being an American
These eyes are desperate to forget all
of the horrors of man made violence

Gaze deep into my eyes and you will see
Stare into my soul and you will find
You will find a stressed, fragile man
You will find secrets that can destroy
You will find lies upholding truths
These eyes have seen cowardly acts by
seemingly moral government officials
Cover ups, scandals, quaint resignations
and other pitfalls of political life
These eyes are desperate to forget all
of the shame of a media obsessed culture

Gaze deep into my eyes and you will see
Stare into my soul and you will learn
You will learn about living through art
You will learn about the joy of creation
You will learn about enduring brush strokes
These eyes have seen towering achievements
by seemingly meek, unassuming curmudgeons
Poetry, painting, live music, comedy
and other examples of pure expression
These eyes are desperate to share love
For it is not always a curse to be haunted

When I read ‘joy of creation’ I seriously thought you meant sex. Anyways‘Dangers of being an American’ is a nice line, I would dig for more peculiar examples though, for having seen the world, and trust me I have (sorry I don’t mean to sound as a snob), being mugged et cetera aint really an ‘all American experience’, there are things that hit much closer to home. Hey creative work should irritate critical thought, right?

Well done Eric. If I could add though that I was left wanting a starker, darker feel to the poem so it could contrast against the ray of hope offered towards the end. I immediately thought of the Catholic church scandal in the U.S. with priests committing the ungodly, and how it has spread like a cancer across the globe. In any case you got us thinking. Thanks!

I feel you Eric. There are those of us that feel very deeply and passionately about so many things in life that we wish only for someone to be able to reach into our soul and share those burdens. I'll validate your haunting and I'll shall your darkness as I gaze into Your eyes. I'll enter this portal that holds so much sorrow and heartache, yet has been brought back from the depths of hell by a redeeming hope of new love, and creations so beautiful that your soul must rejoice.

Wow! Thank you so much for that. Sometimes I think as artists we just FEEL to much. We are wide open for the creative process, but life finds a way to weave its unpredictable spell upon us all...
